An Asian Carribean Jamaican connection!
We talk to the oldest Ethnic Caribbean and Jamaican store in Leeds serving the local community for over 40 years, their growth and the relationships that have blossomed with Huque Chaudhry.
Medina’s story begins in the 1960’s in the Industrial North. The two founding fathers of the business were Raj Mohammed and Fazal Hussain – two aspiring young and extremely hardworking people from Northern Pakistan having settled in the UK in search of a better life.
In those days it was common for immigrants to be working in foundries and mills, and Fazal Hussain was no different. Upon arrival to the UK he took up a job in a steel foundry working long and arduous hours, and quickly realised that this was going to be a difficult route to making a decent income. He began a small shop on Roundhay Road in the mid 70’s, where the first seeds of Medina Supermarket were sowed.
We wanted to create relationships in the community, something that would give the local community what they desperately needed.- Fazal Hussain
In the Mid 80’s whilst running this small grocery shop he found a place in Chapeltown made a bid to buy the unit next door to the small grocery store to what is now the entire Medina supermarket.
This move was a gutsy one, as many business owners in a very unknown part of Leeds that had a predominantly afro-caribbean residential neighbourhood.
This proved to be a great idea – as the local residential population had no real large grocery store to purchase ethnic goods from.
In 1997 Fazal brought his son Waseem and other two sons into the business and they worked tirelessly to increase product range and improve business efficiency.
In 1999 they joined a symbol group under the Costcutter brand which was the break they needed to move the business up to the next level. It was at this time the unit on the other side of the current two units was bought, further expanding the Medina brand to a three unit supermarket – this opened fully in June 2010 with a more diverse range of everyday groceries as well as ethnic foods.
There’s two things my father always told me – have a good bank manager and a good accountant. I’m glad to say we had both!- Waseem Hussain
Huque Chaudhry and Medina have had one of the closest relationships for over 20 years together.
From the very beginning we could see that Medina was a very different breed of business.
Their outside-the-box thinking and creating a business with the vision that was rare in those days set them apart from others in the same trade.
As our business was growing Medina was a natural partner for us to work with – and we always viewed them and other clients as exactly that – partners. Our relationship was personal and our business dealings were always based on mutual trust and understanding.
We needed an accountant who understood our position and we are so happy to say Huque Chaudhry was on the same page. We never had a problem with accounts, and we appreciated their in depth knowledge to help us with our business direction.- Waseem Hussain
We like to help our clients, and Medina was no exception.
We could see that Fazal was working extremely hard in the business and looking to expand on his success with the unit expansion.
Throughout this time it was important to keep finance in order, as its at this time that cashflow can suffer as a result of major expenditure.
We sought to create a level of trust with Medina that stands to this day and it’s something we are both proud of.
